Dr. Tom DeMeester will introduce the Restech Dx-pH
Measurement System to the attendees of the "Annual Conference on Medical and Surgical Aspects of Esophageal and Foregut Disorders" to be held in Maui, Hawaii February 16-21, 2006.
Dr. DeMeester is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on the diagnosis and treatment of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) due to his pioneering work with ambulatory pH monitoring and his development of the "DeMeester Score" with Dr. Lawrence Johnson. Dr. DeMeester is a Professor of General and Thoracic Surgery at the USC Keck School of Medicine. He also serves as Chairman for the Department of Surgery.
Restech's new Dx-pH Measurement System reliably monitors aerosolized pH events in the airway which are associated with gastric reflux. This system is the first to measure and record pH of the breath in real time.
Gastric reflux in the airway has been shown to exacerbate respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic cough, and sleep apnea, as well as throat disorders including chronic throat clearing and hoarseness. The Restech device offers specialists across many areas the ability to better understand the effects of gastric reflux on their patients' conditions.
Until now, the options for detecting gastric reflux events were limited to either the insertion of a trans-nasal esophageal catheter, or the attachment of a capsule to the esophageal wall, just above the stomach. These methods require procedures that are often time consuming, and require extensive training to perform.
The Restech sensor rests at the end of a thin, pliable catheter that is inserted through the naris and anchored behind the uvula. This simple procedure can be completed in a physician's office with no additional equipment. Once the probe is in place, there is minimal interference with the patient's eating, drinking or speaking.
Restech is a privately funded manufacturer of medical devices that aid in the understanding and treatment of reflux related respiratory disorders.
