Restech (Respiratory Technology Corporation) announced today that U.S. patent number 7,101,341 has been issued for real-time sensing of airway pH and other breath chemistries. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) now affords protection of Restech’s Dx–pH Measurement System™ technology for measuring the pH of acid reflux in the airway, also referred to as laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Two further patents that protect the pH sensor technology used in the Dx–pH Measurement System have been allowed and are in the process of being issued by the USPTO. Restech has also filed for international patent protection. These and other Restech patents are licensed under agreement from Sierra Medical Technology, Inc. of Poway, California.
Currently, a total of 12 domestic and international patent applications have been filed. The patents cover the areas of pH sensor technology, respiratory monitoring and therapy, as well as specific novel technologies that enable the Dx–System to function in its unique environment.
Restech’s patent attorney, Michael Klicpera, of Patent Technology, Inc. asserts, “Restech’s success with domestic patent allowance and issuance should greatly influence the likelihood of international allowance.”
The Dx–Probe™, with its miniature sensor is the core of the Dx–pH Measurement System, enabling detection of aerosolized reflux in the patient’s airway associated with asthma, sleep apnea, COPD and other respiratory diseases.
Standard pH catheters are designed with a large gap between the pH sensor and a reference electrode, requiring this gap to be bridged by liquid in order to yield a pH value. These catheters are intended for use in the esophagus, where there is an adequate amount of liquid to bridge this gap. The teardrop shaped Dx–pH Probe is constructed with a gap of only 2/1000 of an inch between the pH sensor and reference electrode. Because its sensor is self-condensing and does not require immersion in liquid, the Dx–pH Probe is able to rest in the upper airway and reliably collect pH data.
Restech is a leader in engineering world-class medical technologies that provide comfortable, reliable solutions to assist physicians in the diagnosis of reflux related health problems.
